                         Speech-to-Text (STT) Software in Inclusive Primary Classrooms


In inclusive primary classrooms, ensuring equitable access to learning is important. Assistive technologies play a crucial role in achieving this goal. One such technology is Speech-to-Text (STT) software, which converts spoken words into written text. This tool is particularly beneficial for students with writing difficulties, such as those with dyslexia, physical impairments, or fine motor challenges.

STT software, like Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Google Docs Voice Typing, allows students to articulate their thoughts verbally, which are then transcribed into text. This process eliminates the physical act of writing, enabling students to focus on content creation rather than the mechanics of writing.

For instance, in a Grade 3 English lesson, students could use STT software to dictate a story. As they speak, the software transcribes their words, allowing them to see their ideas materialize in real-time. This approach not only supports students with writing difficulties but also encourages creativity and self-expression.

Research indicates that STT software can significantly enhance writing skills among students with learning disabilities. A study by MacArthur and Cavalier (2004) found that students using STT software produced longer, and more complex written compositions compared to those who wrote manually. Similarly, Alzrayer et al. (2014) reported improvements in writing fluency and quality among students with disabilities when using STT tools.

While STT software offers numerous benefits, its effectiveness is contingent upon proper implementation. Teachers must provide explicit instruction on how to use the software effectively and integrate it into the curriculum. Additionally, students should receive training to maximize the tool's potential. Without adequate support, the technology may not yield the desired outcomes.

Moreover, it's essential to consider the individual needs of students. Not all students with writing difficulties will benefit equally from STT software. Therefore, it's crucial to assess each student's specific challenges and determine whether STT is the most appropriate tool for them.

STT software is a valuable assistive technology that can enhance writing skills and promote inclusivity in primary classrooms. When implemented thoughtfully and supported adequately, it empowers students with writing difficulties to participate fully in the learning process.

R eflection on the Use of Constructive ICT Tools I have come to recognize the powerful role that constructive ICT tools play in promoting active, participatory learning. Unlike traditional resources that often position students as passive consumers of information, constructive tools allow learners to create, collaborate, and interact with content in meaningful ways.
